Swedish wrestling National Team captain Zigmunds Jansons has passed away after a short period of illness. He was 52 years old.

Jansons worked with the Swedish national team for 15 years, lately as the captain for the men’s team in Greek and Roman style.

“His dedication to wrestling has made a huge impression on everyone who has had the privilege of coaching and working with him. Zigge, who has worked with the Swedish national team in various roles for fifteen years and has been Sweden’s national team captain since 2017, has worked to lift both young and established wrestlers to new levels at both club and national team level,” The Swedish Wrestling Federation wrote in a statement.

Zigmunds Jansons was a force in Swedish wrestling

Zigmunds Jansons grew up in Latvia during the Soviet era.

He came to Sweden together with his brother in the mid-1990s to devote himself wholeheartedly to wrestling.

“Zigge’s presence and leadership has inspired many wrestlers and coaches, and he leaves a great void behind him. He will be deeply missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones at this difficult time. Rest in peace Zigge,” The Swedish Wrestling Federation wrote.
