Last Saturday, former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder defeated Finnish-Swede Robert Helenius with a brutal first-round knockout. However, at the post-fight press conference, ”The Bronze Bomber” was very emotional about finishing his friend and former sparring partner.

“When you have a relationship with a man, when you love a man, when you’ve built a fierce friendship with another man, although he’s a thousand miles away from where I am, when you see things like that, you want to come to the aid. I wanted to come to his aid but they wouldn’t let me. I understood because he needed space, but my heart goes out to him, and I hope he’s doing okay and he’ll be able to go back to his family. Because this is a tough business that we’re in,” Wilder said.

Later, a video was released where Wilder is seen apologizing to Robert Helenius in a hotel room.

Deontay Wilder: ”I’m back!”

It was early in the first round at the at the Barclays Center, that “The Bronze Bomber” caught his opponent, with a right hand as he was moving in. The punch knocked out Helenius cold and the fight was immediately stopped.

With the instant knockout win, Wilder moved to 43-2-1, with mind-blowing 42 KO’s.

“Who’s next?” Wilder said after the fight. “I’m down for whatever. Whether it’s Andy Ruiz, Oleksandr Usyk or whoever. I’m back!”
