World Championships day 3: Four Swedish fighters advances!

The 2022 IMMAF World Championships takes place in Serbia, between February 11 and February 17.

Sweden is represented by a solid National team, featuring 14 fighters – nine male and five female – competing in twelve weight divisions.

Astrid Vikgren lost gruelling fight

European Championship silver medalist Astrid Vikgren entered to tournament as she faced Mexico’s Obdulia Yuliana Garcia Gonzalez in the junior flyweight quarter finals.

The 20-year-old Swede started strong, dominating the first round with relentless pressure and heavy ground-and-pound, and was close to finishing the fight.

However, the Mexican weathered the storm and came back strong in the second and third round with aggressive striking and heavy pressure, and was able to secure the win.

Rafael Kveldstad won tough Nordic derby

Rafael Kveldstad entered the World Cup to face Finland’s Juho Suvanto in the middleweight quarter finals.

After three tough rounds, where both fighters had their moments, both on the ground and on the feet, the Swede stood as the winner in the evenly matched Nordic derby.

Yrsa Sandin moves on to the semi finals

Lightweight Yrsa Sandin was scheduled to enter the competition today, to face Brazil’s Fernanda Guersone in the quarter finals.

However, due to a No-Show from the Brazilian, Sandin will move on to fight in the semi finals. There she will face the confident Isabelle McGaughey from England, who was on fire in her quarter finals earlier today.

Ellen Karlsson lost to IMMAF veteran

Yesterday, Ellen Karlsson dominated Linda Vesela from Slovakia to advance to the quarter finals via a third-round TKO.

Today, the Swede faced Paulina Kontna from Poland, who competed in multiple IMMAF tournaments, and won silver in the European Championships last year.

The strong Karlsson started the first round well, but as the fight took to the ground, Kontna took over and landed heavy ground-and-pound until the referee stopped the bout.

Ellen Karlsson showed both skills and heart in her first IMMAF tournament.

Hanna Palmquist wins with another first-round finish

Hanna Palmquist took a big win yesterday, as she stopped Mavluda Abdullozoda in the first round, and when she faced Ukraine’s Marta Pankiv in the quarter finals, she managed to repeat her achievement.

Pankiv took the fight to the ground early, but a calm and collected Palmquist defended well. Just two minutes into the first round, the Swede found an armbar that quickly forced the Ukrainian to tap.

Hanna Palmquist is now ready for the semi finals where she will face Faine Mesquita Pereira from Australia.

Emma Schioler won with a solid performance

Featherweight Emma Schioler entered the tournaments in the quarter finals as she faced Veronica Meza from USA.

The Swede showed her good striking from the start, landing punches down the pipe and solid knees in the clinch.

In the second and third round, Meza pressured against the cage, but Schioler defended well and landed heavy knees to the body. The Swedish featherweight ended the fight with more solid striking on the feet to secure the win via unanimous decicions.

Strong start for Emma Schioler who will face Sabrina De Sousa in the semi finals.
