Former UFC lightweight Olivier Aubin-Mercier, also known as the “Canadian Gangster”, has some words for those criticizing Khamzat Chimaev for his win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.

Chimaev and Burns put on a real barn burner which saw “Borz” winning by unanimous decision after three tough rounds. Some fans feel that Khamzat should have won the fight in a more dominating fashion, but according to Aubin-Mercier, that’s just plain stupid.

“I don’t know why people thought it was going to be a walk in the park. I think people are just stupid, that’s what I think. They were stupid before the fight and they are stupid after the fight. That’s what amazed me is that everybody’s like, ‘Oh he’s not that good.’ Bro, like do you remember Khabib [Nurmagomedov] vs. [Gleison] Tibau? Do we remember that fight? And he’s still the greatest ever. Khabib, he’s the best fighter at 155 ever, that’s for sure. But we just going to forget about that? Since Khamzat Chimaev didn’t finish Gilbert Burns like that (snaps fingers) after his [fifth] fight we’re gonna say he’s not that good? No,” Olivier Aubin-Mercier said at the 2022 PFL media day (h/t MMA Mania).

Khamzat Chimaev’s victory over Gilbert Burns saw him propel to a no. 3 spot on the official UFC welterweight rankings. According to UFC president Dana White, the Swedish star will face top contender Colby Covington in his next fight.
