WBC super lightweight world champion Regis Prograis sparred MMA star Nate Diaz as he prepared for a boxing world title fight.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen,” Prograis said about the spontaneous sparring session. “It only happened because his sparring partner didn’t show up, so they asked, ‘Do you want to spar?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll spar Nate Diaz.’ That’s how it happened.”

The world champion claimed had just finished a huge plate of shrimp pasta and wasn’t supposed to spar, but when Daiz’s training partner didn’t show up, he could not resist to test out the MMA fighter to see what he had.

”He was super tough,” Prograis. “I kind of knew that already. I knew Nate Diaz, I knew his reputation, so I knew he was going to be real tough. That’s kind of what it was. We just went and locked horns and tried to kill each other.”

Nate Diaz wanted to be a pro boxer at 18

Diaz is facing YouTuber turned pro boxer Jake Paul on August 5.

“I would have been a pro boxer when I was 18 years old but a cage fight came up first so I was stuck in a cage my whole career,” Diaz said at a press conference a few weeks back. There were times when I got locked in a contract right away from the UFC. So I was already locked down from the beginning.”
