UFC star Sean O’Malley became the bantamweight champion as he defeated Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 on August 19.

However, according to his coach, Tim Welch, ”Sugar” was far from training on the level they wanted.

”I couldn’t train Sean for that fight how I wanted to. I know I could properly get him prepared with the takedown defense, developing his guard. But we had to focus on what we could control, and that was just mitts, striking, and good footwork,” Welch said.

The coach claimed it was a a big relief for him when the fight was over and the ”monster” that is Sterling was stopped.

”The most dangerous match for us in the division, easily,” Welch said.

Sean O’Malley pulled through

According to the coach, the lion part of the promotion’s fighter would have pulled of a title fight with the kind of injuries O’Malley had.

”I didn’t really mention it, but that injury would have caused probably 95 percent of people to pull out. I was kind of beating around the bush a little bit, getting his feel for it. He was like, ’No way.’ There was no way he was pulling out of the fight… But it could be worse. There’s been champions or people who have fought for the belt with worse injuries.”
