Even though he’s coming off a couple of losses, Irish superstar Conor McGregor has stated that he’s targeting a welterweight title fight against Kamaru Usman next.
However, MMA analyst and former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has another – rather unexpected – suggestion for the return of “The Notorious”. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Sonnen explains why he thinks No. 11 ranked Michael Chiesa is actually the perfect opponent for McGregor.
“Michael Chiesa. That’s the one that has absolutely never been discussed by anybody,” Sonnen says.
Michael Chiesa sued Conor McGregor following infamous bus attack
As you might remember, Chiesa has a history with McGregor as he was one of the fighters affected by the infamous bus attack during the UFC 223 fight week in Brooklyn. Chiesa was injured and forced to pull out of the event as he was cut by glass when McGregor decided to throw a dolly at the bus’s window, while Chiesa and other fighters were sitting inside together with McGregor’s rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Chiesa later filed a lawsuit against McGregor.
“I personally believe that there is a gag order. I personally believe there’s a reason that Chiesa’s never called out McGregor,” Sonnen says. “But just to remind you guys when the bus incident between Conor and the dolly and Khabib took place, there was lawsuits that followed that, and Chiesa was one of them. Chiesa got glass into his eye – it was very bad experience.
“I think that there’s a story there, personally. Whether that turned into fruition and that turned into a fight, I’ve always thought there was a story there that should be told – but neither guy has told it. Neither guy’s manager has told it. Neither camp has told it. No trainers have told it. I just elected on my own that there must be some kind of a gag order in place. But that’s the match. That’s a very interesting match from a stylistic standpoint. That checks a lot of boxes.”
