An alleged backstage altercation between multiple fighters forced the UFC to cancel the UFC 279 press conference for safety reasons.
According to UFC president Dana White, the altercation involved welterweights Kevin Holland, Khamzat Chimaev, Nate Diaz, and one other unnamed fighter.
“Multiple crazy – I don’t even know what to call it,” White said. “However many years, 22 years, however long I’ve been doing this, we’ve never had an incident like today. All hell broke loose out here. I don’t even know how to. We stopped it, but we didn’t do a good job of not letting happen. I just don’t know.”
White could see where the UFC 279 press conference was going
“The Diaz camp showed up with 57 people. Khamzat’s team had 30-something people. Then you had multiple guys going on back here. It was crazy. It was absolutely nuts back here,” White said.
According to the UFC president, things got very physical with objects allegedly being thrown.
“It was lots of stuff going on back there. I made the right decision, believe me,” White told the press.
“I could see where this was going. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out where this whole press conference was headed.”
According to White, there were “multiple things” that started the altercation.
“There were multiple things going on at the same time. It was not just one thing that erupted, there were multiple things going on back here at the same time ”
