While featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is recovering from a hand surgery, top contenders Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett could potentially face each other in an interim title fight.
However, that’s not something “El Pantera” is very keen on.
“What is in my mind right now is fighting Alexander Volkanovski, and that’s always on my mind right now,” Rodriguez said at UFC 277 . “I’m waiting for him.”
It’s no secret that Volkanovski is aiming to fight for the lightweight title next, but that does not seem to bother the Mexican featherweight.
“Hopefully he wins the 155-pound, so it will be a bigger accomplishment for me whenever I get to fight him, and beat him,” Rodriguez said and dismissed the idea of a interim title fight Emmet. “Why when I’m knocking on the door for the title? It doesn’t make any sense.”
Dana White is not a big fan of “waiting around”
To wait for the title shot probably sounds like a bad plan to UFC president Dana White. In a recent chat with Robbie Fox, he actually named the concept of “waiting around” as one of the things he finds especially annoying with UFC fighters.
“I never like when guys say, ‘I just wanna wait around’. That’s the patented worst move of all time,” White said. “Look back throughout history for guys who said, ‘I just wanna wait around,’ and see how that plays out for you. That story ends the same every time.”
