Former interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje’s upcoming rematch with Dustin Poirier is one of the absolute peaks of this summer’s UFC events. With the vacant BMF title on the line, the fight will headline UFC 291 on July 29.

Recently talking to Cageside Press, “The Highlight” gave his thoughts on the debated BMF title and what it means for a UFC fighter.

“My true assessment: When Masvidal and Diaz fought for it I was like, ‘This is stupid.’ I still think it’s kind of stupid,” Gaethje said. “However, to the fans that say it’s stupid, I say that it’s ultimately the UFC giving one more fighter one more opportunity to win and to gain an opportunity to get pay-per-view points.”

“This belt, just like interim belts, on paper, are a championship. You are a champion in the eyes of the UFC, and when you are a champion in the eyes of the UFC, you get paid different.”

Justin Gaethje and Dustin Gaethje has 24 post-fight bonuses

The two lightweight rivals are among the most entertaining and popular fighters on the entire UFC roster, with a combined 24 fight-night bonuses to their names.

Both Justin Gaethje and Dustin Gaethje have been interim lightweight champions, but only one will be able to add the BMF-title to the collection.

“It’s a cool looking belt. I think it’s little bit of a show, but I think it’s ultimately UFC throwing a bone, and I’ve got to be thankful for that,” Gaethje said.
