On the main card of Saturday’s UFC 286, Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson returns to action to clash with American bonus-machine Bryan Barberena.
At Wednesday’s media day, the welterweight shared his thoughts on the upcoming fight and his battle tested opponent.
“He’s exciting, I like his fights. He’s not going to try to win on points. He’s going to try to finish the fight,” Nelson said. “I’m excited to share the octagon with him.”
“I always go in there to finish my fights, and so does he, so I don’t think this one is going to the judges. I will try to finish him early if possible, if not, then in the second or third round.”
Gunnar Nelson competed several times in England, kind of his second home. In fact, he clashed with reigning welterweight champion Leon Edwards in a close fight back in 2019.
“Leon is a nice guy. I like him and we get along well. Obviously the match didn’t go my way, but it was a close one and I wish Leon all the best,” Nelson said.
At the press conference, “Gunni” predicted that Edwards will still be the division’s champion after UFC 286.
“I think Leon is going to look a lot better than he did last time,” Nelson said. “I think he’s going to win.”
