UFC just updated their rankings, and welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is still ranked No. 1 on the pound-for-pound list. In a new interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, he explains why he is the best fighter on Earth.

“The world has to realize that right now, I am the pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet, because this is not just overnight. This is years and years that I have been putting in work like this,” Usman said.

Last year, the welterweight champion defended his title three times against Gilbert Burns, Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington. All in all, he successfully defended his belt five times since winning the title back in March 2019.

“Because not every pound-for-pound fighter can step in there three times in a year and put on spectacular, not just spectacular performances, put on three humungous performances,” Usman said. “So it’s not just being able to go in there and do it, not just be able to do it, do it spectacularly.”

Kamaru Usman gives props to Adesanya and Volkanovski

With that said, Kamaru Usman still recognize that there is a slim margin to No. 2 ranked Alexander Volkanovski and No. 3 ranked Israel Adesanya.

“These guys are phenomenal guys, and when you are looking at pound-for-pound, the top three guys should be that close,” Usman said. “All three of us have combined, what, three losses, four losses?”

“You know, I love all these guys, Volkanovski, just a great guy, love him. Izzy as well. These are all my guys.”
