When top ranked UFC welterweights Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns clashed in April 2022, MMA fans all over the world held their breaths for 15 action packed minutes. After the final bell, everyone knew that they’d witnessed one of the best fights of 2022, even though the year just started.
Now, nine months later, the bout wins Dana White’s 2022 President’s Choice Awards for Fight of the Year.
“Thank you Dana White, thank you to my fans and we’re coming soon. Take the belt in 2023,” Khamzat said in his acceptance speech.
Chimaev’s fellow winner, Burns, claimed he is ready for a new Fight of the Year in 2023.
“I just got the news that my fight got the UFC honors, my fight with Khamzat Chimaev, April 2022, was elected one of the best fights, and it got the UFC honors for it. So I’m very happy! Thank you UFC, I love the company, thank you all of the fans, you guys are the best,” Burns said.
The other nominees for Fight of the Year were Dustin Poirier vs. Michael Chandler, Matt Schnell vs. Sumudaerji and Glover Teixeira vs. Jiri Prochazka.
MMA expert, and former UFC lightweight, Paul Felder commented on the award winning fight.
“Chimaev, I think maybe underestimated him a little bit, but I think he also wanted that kind of a fight right. He talked about that he wants to be in these wars, that he wants to be in these battles. He’s a true fighter and he got to show that,” Felder said about the fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns.
