In the main event of UFC 278, Leon Edwards defeated Kamaru Usman with a violent fifth-round head kick and is now the new welterweight champion of the world.

After the upset win, No. 3 ranked welterweight and rising star Khamzat Chimaev took to Twitter to send a messege to Edwards.

“Congratulations Leon Edwards. See you soon boy,” Chimaev wrote in a tweet.

At the event’s post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White said that Kamaru Usman will get a rematch on Edwards home-turf in England. Edwards seemed up for fighting Usman again, or whoever the organization puts in front of him.

“Jorge would be good. Having him in the UK would be good. If not, let’s run it back at Wembley with Kamaru,” Edwards said. “Let them all call me out. First they are all doubting me, now they are all calling me out.”

Khamzat Chimaev was supposed to fight the new champion in the main event of UFC Fight Night 183 back in December 2020. However, both Edwards and Chimaev tested positive for COVID-19, and the bout was postponed. The two welterweights were then rescheduled for UFC Fight Night 185 January 20, 2021, and at UFC Fight Night 187 on March 13, but these fights were also cancelled.

The Swede went on to defeat Li Jingliang in October 2021 and Gilbert Burns in April 2022.
