UFC CEO Dana White has not yet announced who will challenge welterweight champion Leon Edwards next.
The champion’s head coach Dave Lovell believes that Belal Muhammad most likely will be the next to fight for the welterweight title.
“Well, let’s put it real — Belal’s earned his place, hasn’t he?” Lovell said on The MMA Hour. “Even though he still hasn’t done what Leon did. He didn’t go through the tribulations Leon did. But you know what? He’s earned himself his contendership.”
However, he’s throwing another name into the mix. A fighter he rather sees Edwards defend his strap against.
“But if I had a choice who would be next, I would prefer [Gilbert] Burns over Belal, because I think Burns brings more to the table than Belal.”
Another fighter that the head coach brings to the table is undefeated finisher Shavkat Rakhmonov who defeated Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at this past Saturday’s UFC 296.
“Shavkat, he had the foot injury so I don’t think he’d be ready for April. And even that, Belal will be ready to go. But will Leon and Belal really be a big pay-per-view? You’ve got to look at it from the business point of view, from the UFC’s point of view,” Lovell said.
