When Leon Edwards became the second British UFC champion ever, he saw a chance to give back to his community back in Birmingham.
Being involved in criminal activity as a teen, “Rocky” now wants to help kids in the same tough situation as he once was.
“I started a charity already, to give back to youth from similiar background to me, that has been involved in gangs and getting into trouble, with single parents and stuff like that you know. I’ve started that already because that’s been a passion of mine from the get going. To be able to that is a pleasure for sure,” Edwards said at the UFC 268 media day.
During the press conference, the welterweight champion also revealed that he’s proud of helping his mother reach a long-time dream.
“For me, probably to open a restaurant for my mom, open a Caribbean takeaway. When I was young, I remember her saying she wanted to own a takeaway one day” Edwards said. “That’s probably my number one thing.”
On Saturday night, the British 31-year-old will defend his welterweight strap for the first time against rival Kamaru Usman.
“Our mentality is in two different places. I feel like he is on his way out, you know ,” Edwards said. “I’m going to open the door for him and give him a little path to follow his fashion dreams”
