Top ranked UFC flyweight Maycee Barber is recovering after her nine-day stay in the hospital after UFC 299 a few weeks back.
In fact, the 25-year-old is grateful to still be alive.
“I was like, ‘I don’t think I’m going to make it. I genuinely was scared, and I was like, ‘Damn, all the people that I’m seeing in the hospital right now might be the last people that I talked to’,” Barber said at The MMA Hour.
”I called my friends, and I was like, ‘I don’t know…’ . It was tough, it was a scary experience, and I hope that I never have to go through that. But also I feel like it’s a testament to a lot of fighters that have had to go through something similar.”
Maycee Barber: ”Wasn’t sure if I was going to make it”
Maycee Barber revealed that the doctors never really found out what was wrong with her, but suspect she may have contracted Streptococcus pyogenes and a staph infection. During her stay in the hospital she also contracted pneumonia and her blood pressure dropped to dangerous levels.
”So they never really got a true answer as to what it was. But the antibiotics that I’m on now are slowly starting to clear it up. So I’m hopeful that it just stays gone and stays away, because for a minute there, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it.”
