According to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, the UFC hopes to book a bantamweight title fight between champion Aljamain Sterling and former champion Henry Cejudo for UFC 284.
Helwani reported the news during a recent episode of The MMA Hour.
UFC 284 will take place in Perth, Australia on February 11. A potential lightweight title bout between the new crowned champion Islam Makhachev and dominant featherweigth champion Volkanovski is rumoured to take place at the event, but nothing is confirmed yet.
Last Saturday, Aljamain Sterling defended his bantamweight title for the second time when he defeated former two-time champion T.J. Dillashaw at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.
Dillashaw came into the fight with an injured shoulder and was clearly compromised until the referee stopped the fight in the second round.
“Aljo” won the UFC bantamweight championship at UFC 259 in March 2021 against Petr Yan after the Russian was disqualified due to an illegal knee. He then defended and unified the title at UFC 273 in April when he defeated Yan via a split decision.
Henry Cejudo’s last octagon appearance came in May 2020 when he defended the bantamweight title against former champion Dominick Cruz. Immediately after the win, Cejudo announced his retirement from the sport.
However, he re-entered the USADA testing pool earlier this year to be able to return to competition in the UFC.
