Bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley got exactly the opponent he wanted for his first title defense. In just a few months he will take on Marlon “Chito” Vera in a fight where he can avenge his career-only loss.

“I don’t get much more excited about a fight than that,” O’Malley said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I want that fight. It’s just perfect. I feel like it’s perfect timing.”

The rivals clashed in the co-main event at UFC 252 on August 16, 2020. Vera damaged a nerve in O’Malley’s leg with an early calf kick and “Sugar” eventually lost the fight via TKO in round one.

“After that first fight, everyone was like, ‘You gotta get that rematch, you gotta get that rematch.’ And I said, ‘I’ll get that rematch when I want that, when it’s time. When it’s time for that rematch, I’m going to call for it and I’ll get it.’ I could’ve gotten that rematch whenever I wanted. I was like, it’s not the right time yet. Now is the right time, so I’m just very excited about that fight.”

Sean O’Malley claims it was a lucky shot

O’Malley claimed that the kick that hurted him in the first fight was a lucky shot from Vera.

“He truly, deep down knows it. That was so lucky. He’s genuinely scared of me,” O’Malley said. “I think he’s very nervous for this fight, 100 percent. He’s too slow. What are you going to do? I’m going to piece him up.”

The fight between Sean O’Malley and Vera will take place at UFC 299 and so far no location has been announced for the event.
