Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker plans to take undefeated Khamzat Chimaev to war in their upcoming five-round fight in Saudi Arabia.
“I’d like to think that I’m going to go in there with a speed advantage and a striking advantage,” Whittaker said. “One of his greatest strengths is the fact that he can force the wrestling on people, and I think it’s going to be a little harder to force the wrestling on me, just because of my distance, because of my control of spacing.”
“He is the boogeyman in the division at the moment – nobody wants to fight him. No one wants to have a go with him. So I get to have that run at him, which will be fun. I think they’re the fights that excite me, because they’re the tests.”
Former middleweight champion, now UFC commentator, Michael Bisping claimed that even though Chimaev is “a force of nature” he has a tendency to gas out in the later rounds. The former champ claimed that it is something the Chimaev Team should really worry about.
“Automatically, if you’re in the corner of Khamzat Chimaev, you’ve got to be concerned,” Bisping said on the “Believe You Me” podcast. “One thing Robert Whittaker is not going to do is run out of gas. He’s a very, very experienced fighter fighting at the highest level for a long time. Without getting into the Xs and Os, the obvious thing is Khamzat always gasses.
