UFC 294 just took place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
In the lightweight main event, reigning champion Islam Makhachev took on his rival Alexander Volkanovski in a title fight rematch.
After a measured start of the first round, Makhachev landed a heavy head kick and followed up with ground-and-pound until the referee stepped in to stop the fight.
“I’m not celebrating the win today,” Makhachev said, referring to the situation in Palestine.
The champion gave credit to Volkanovsko who took the fight on short notice.
“I showed him a couple of low kicks and body kicks and just changed to high kicks. I trained that for Oliveira, nothing changed. “I want to say thank you, he’s a real champion, you have to turn off the lights to beat this guy. He’s going to fight all five rounds, he’s never giving up, he’s a real champion. Thank you Alex again.”
Chimaev defeated Usman in a great fight
The co-main event featured a highly interesting middleweight bout between undefeated Khamzat Chimaev and former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
Chimaev dominated the first round with his supreme wrestling skills. However, Usman came back stronger in the second and third round. After 15 minutes of action, Chimaev stood as the winner via majority decision with 29-27, 29-27, and 28-28 on the scorecards.
