ONE Championship boss Chatri Sityodtong backs up Swedish striking sensation Smilla Sundell in her wish to try and reclaim the strawweight Muay Thai title.
However, in a recent interview with Sportskeeda, he hinted that a flyweight division could open up in the next few months. Something that the Swede has been asking for lately.
”It would not surprise me if we did something (at 135 lbs) in the next few months. But I agree with Smilla. For her own legacy she should not leave the division and the title missing weight, losing on the scale, so to speak,” Sityodtong said.
Smilla Sundell stopped Natalia Diachkova in the main event of ONE Fight Night 22 a while back.
In the last seconds of the second round, she landed a solid punch to the liver and followed up with relentless strikes to the head until the referee was forced to stop the fight.
Before the fight, Sundell commented on missing weight and shared her desire to fight in a flyweight division.
“Turning 20 this year. I signed the contract when I was 16. I have grown, yes. I put on some muscles and I think I grew even taller,” Sundell said.
