This weekend, ONE atomweight champion Angela Lee will move up to flyweight to complete her heated trilogy with the promotions flyweight champion Xiong Jing Nan.
The infected rivalry between Lee and Xiong is on a massive scale. The champions fought each other in title fights in two weight divisions, with one win each. It’s probably safe to say that the two fights were the most difficult title defenses both fighters had in their careers.
In their first bout, in March 2019, Lee challenged Xiong for the strawweight title, but was finished with body kicks and punches in the fifth and final round.
In the highly anticipated rematch in October 2019, Xiong was the one who challenged Lee for the atomweight belt. However, in this fight, Lee stood as the winner via a fifth-round rear-naked-choke.
Now, almost three years later, we will finally see the rivals clash in a third grudge match. MMA expert Dan Hardy commented on the fight on his YouTube channel.
“With them being so competitive, I could imagine it going back and forth one way and then the other. Both of them got the finish over one another in the fifth round after a very competitive 20 something minutes.”
“I think we’re in for an absolute treat with this one.”
After becoming a mother in 2021, Angele Lee returned to the cage in March and defended her atomweight belt against Stamp Fairtex in dominant fashion. With the win, she became the first mom-champ to defend a title in ONE.
Now, it’s time to face her long-time rival Xiong again and fulfill her dream of becoming double champion.
“Capturing the second title, becoming champ-champ, this is what I’ve been after for so many years. Now is finally the right time, everything’s lined up, and I need to capitalize on this moment and capture it, because if I don’t, I’m not going to get (another) chance to fight for this belt,” Lee said in an interview with ONE.
