Frontkick’s Tobias Lindkvist talks major and minor events from this past week in the Sunday Column.
UFC 305 in Perth
The dust has barely settled but it’s time to reflect on UFC 305. A somewhat lackluster card, but man, the main card delivered.
Kara-France didn’t take his foot off the gas as he TKO’d former title challenger Steve Erceg.
Dricus Du Plessis stopped Israel Adesanya in the thrilling title fight.
And, Dan Hooker.
From the start he delivered the goods, clipping Gamrot with shots and bringing the crowd to life. The blood-smeared smile between the first and second round said it all. What an entertaining fighter that man is. Now he will enter the top 10, maybe even the top 5, again.
The curse of Karl Albrektsson
With five (!) straight cancelled fights, it’s fair to say that 2024 has not been the year of Swedish light heavyweight Karl Albrektsson.
Hopefully we will see Albrektsson step into the cage before the end of the year to make his long-awaited PFL debut.
Read between the lines?
UFC CEO Dana White has doubled down on Conor McGregor not fighting in 2024.
“As of right now, I believe that Conor will not fight this year,” White told SportsNet.
According to Michael Chandler, who seems to think of himself as the No. 1 interpreter of the UFC CEO, White’s words actually mean that the fight is on for December.
“So you can read between the lines, but as far as I know, this fight has some very huge prospects to fight by the end of the year. Conor’s ready, I’m ready, let’s sign on the dotted line,” Chandler said.
Love the UFC’ custom shorts
More and more UFC fighters get to wear custom fight kits as part of a special initiative by the UFC’s uniform partner Venum.
As an old skateboarder I just love the concept of custom shorts. In the skateboard world, all the pro’s had their own models which was such a cool thing for the kids. Unique stuff creates buzz! Keep up the good work UFC!
The Sunday Column song of the week
”Hold On, I’m Comin'” is one of my absolute favorite songs of the 60’s. Recorded by soul duo Sam & Dave, the raw and gritty song perfectly captures the gospel-infused sound that made them famous.
