Andreas Gustafsson after UFC Paris: “I’ve Received a Lot of Hate and Love”
Publicerat
After a tough loss at UFC Paris, Swedish middleweight Andreas “Bane” Gustafsson has taken time to reflect on what went wrong and what needs to change.
The 34-year-old admits he made mistakes in his preparation, but says he is more motivated than ever to come back stronger – and prove that he belongs among the best in the UFC.

When Andreas Gustafsson first stepped into the UFC octagon in June, he made a clear statement. Facing UFC welterweight veteran Khaos Williams, the Swede ”Bane” delivered a dominant debut performance, winning by unanimous decision in his first octagon outing.
The win did not only introduce him to the wider MMA audience, but also earned praise across the community, including from UFC commentator Joe Rogan, who highlighted Gustafsson’s toughness and relentless style on the JRE MMA Show.
That night set high expectations for Gustafsson’s second bout, and heading into UFC Paris, fans and analysts alike saw him as one of Europe’s most promising new names on the roster. But instead of a big breakthrough, his fight with Rinat Fakhretdinov ended in just 54 seconds, a crushing setback for the Swede.
Speaking with Matias Andres from Frontkick, Andreas Gustafsson opened up about the disappointment, the mistakes he made in camp, and what must change before his next fight.
– We had a good feeling, the whole team. The preparations went well, and everything felt right all the way through. I did have a tough weight cut. It was brutal that morning, and I barely made it, but I recovered well. I don’t think that’s the reason why the fight didn’t go my way.
The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, especially after such a strong start to his UFC journey.
– I still haven’t really managed to process what happened. It’s just so damn disappointing. Obviously, this was not what I wanted. In terms of performance, this is probably the worst I’ve ever done.
– It’s a really tough loss. If I had lost in a worthy way, a war over three rounds, that would have been different. But he caught me hard and pushed me against the cage. Everything went black and blurry, and I didn’t know where I was.
– I’m frustrated, I’m angry, I’m sad. Not because I lost the fight. Everyone can lose, but the way I lost is not okay for me. I can lose a fight, but then I should be half dead.
Andreas Gustafsson: Major changes needed before next UFC fight
Rather than dwell on the loss, Andreas Gustafsson has already started to think about what must change in his preparation.
”Bane” admits that his most recent training camp was unbalanced. He focused too much on strength and conditioning at the expense of actual fight training.
– I need to change my training quite a bit before the next fight, the whole setup. I don’t know exactly what yet, but it has to be a different kind of camp. I get very obsessive. When I get stuck on something I enjoy, I’ll do it all the time, twice a day.
– There was less martial arts than usual, which may have been a contributing factor. There was too much focus on the physical side. I’ve always been like that, but at some point I have to realize that I can’t just rely on being physical at this level.

Andreas Gustafsson: ”I’ve received a lot of hate”
While the loss was painful, Gustafsson emphasizes that the aftermath has also been a reminder of the strong support he has from Swedish fans.
– I’ve received a lot of hate and a lot of love. I can only thank everyone, especially all the Swedes who have supported me so strongly. To all my countrymen and women, a big thank you for standing by me. It means so much. It’s not fun as an athlete to be hated for the sport you do.
For Gustafsson, the plan is clear: no short-notice fights, a smarter camp, and a quick return to the octagon.
– We won’t take a short-notice fight if we get that offer. We need to restructure. I need to train differently to be at this level. I want a camp where I feel like I’ve come back and found myself again. It can’t take too long. I’m not injured.
– And I can promise everyone that I will come back stronger and show the “Bane” you’ve all seen before. I’m going to be a real bastard!
