Andreas Gustafsson opens up on the epic battle at FCR 16: ”I was ready to die”

Swedish MMA fighter Andreas Gustafsson put on perhaps the best and bloodiest fight to ever take place in Scandinavia as he went toe to toe with Toni Lampinen in the main event of FCR 16.

Recently visiting Käftsmällspodden, Sweden’s leading podcast about fighting, ”Bane” opened up on the tough and violent fight.

”I underestimated him big time. It was stupid of me, Finnish people are hard,” Gustafsson said and claimed he took the fight a bit too lightly.

The strategy of shocking Lampinen, taking him down and punching him out didn’t not work as planned.

”I quickly felt that it wouldn’t work. He was very stable in the clinch. I wasn’t ready for that,” Gustafsson admitted. ”I almost floored him in the first round, after two-three minutes, but he recovered. In the second round it was more like ’fuck it’, I can take his punches and my nose was already broken.”

Lampinen hit ”Bane” with a clean and well-timed elbow that broke the nose badly.

”It just broke. I sliced up his elbow with my nose bone. I’m kind of proud of that,” Gustafsson said with a laugh. ”The second round was just fun. I love fights when you have to dig deep. There are mixed emotions of course.”

However, ”Bane” had no doubt in his mind that he would get his hand raised.

”I knew I was tougher, that he was going to fold and that I wouldn’t. I’m ready to die there, it doesn’t matter. If he doesn’t knock me out he will never win and that’s what happened.”
