On October 22, Charles Oliveira will face Islam Makhachev in the highly anticipated lightweight title bout at UFC 280. In a recent interview, the former champion revealed that he will be doing some things differently than he usually does going into the fight.

”I told Diego, this time I want to do something different. I never wanted to come to the US so far in advance. But this time I am going there I think 20 days before the fight. If I’m not mistaken, 15 people from the team are going, so practically all my team,” Oliveira said. ”The people who help to do my camp, who help me, are going there this time. And I believe that’s it. I think the most important thing is to get there and get your head straight.”

Charles Oliveira was stripped of lightweight title

On May 7, Charles Oliveira was set to make his second title defense against Justin Gaethje. However, at the weigh-ins, ”do Bronx” weighed in half a pound over the divisional limit and therefore became the first-ever champion stripped of the title due to missing weight.

He then defeated Gaethje via a first-round submission and was declared the number one contender to the lightweight title.

Despite not being the official champion, Charles Oliveira is widely considered to be the king of the lightweight division.
