Former European amateur MMA champion Amir Malekpour is a few weeks away from his biggest fight to date.

On June 3, he will take on the former two-time European Champion Renato Vidovic for the inaugural FCR flyweight title at Fight Club Rush 16.

In a recent episode of Sweden’s leading fighting pod cast, Käftsmällspodden, Malekpour gives his toughts about the upcoming title bout and his dangerous opponent.

”It will be fun! It’s the first time we have a belt in the weight class in Sweden right? I know Swedish MMA and I never hear about it. So I will make history.”

Even though he’s confident in himself, Malekpour has a lot of respect for Vidovic going into the red-hot title fight.

”He’s good. He congratulated me after my last win. And no one had talked about us fighting for the belt, so I wrote to him and said ’Listen, you are the king of 57 kilo okay? You’re the best in the division’, and two weeks later I found out that I will face him next,” Malekpour laughs.

Amir Malekpour moves down in weight

After a succussful amateur career Malekpour made his pro debut in April 2019 with a win against Martin Fouda. Since then he has pulled together a record of 4-2, with three wins in his past four fights.

Ahead of the championship bout at FCR 16, he will drop down in weight to compete at flyweight.

”I never really competed at a weight class. I started at 66 kilos and then dropped two kilos at a time. Now we are at the limit, 57 kilo, I think this is my natural weight class. The level is high and the margins are crucial so I can’t mess around with the weight.”

The two championship combatants actually clashed as amateurs in the early days of their careers.

”The fight went my way in the first two rounds, I took over more and more,” Malekpour said about the fight. ”So I started to raise the pace more and more, and I was a bit nonchalant, and that fucker hits hard. It was the first time I ever got knocked out. I learned a lesson.”

If he gets his hand raised and the belt around his waist on June 3, Malekpour believes there will be a lot of focus on him from the rest of the division.

”Everyone wants the belt. When fighters challenge me it won’t be personal, they only want the belt,” he said. ”I think I’m ready for it. I started to see the sport in a different way.”
