Tensions are high ahead of UFC 285, as Jon Jones returns to the octagon to clash with French striker Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight title.

Both contenders have been respectful to each other in the build up to the fight, but at yesterday’s media day, the veteran champion took a jab at his opponent, who is relatively new to the sport.

“Ciryl is the most incomplete fighter in the Top 5 right now,” Jones said at the media day. ”He has really good striking, and really good footwork, but I’ve watched his fights. He got tired in his fight with Francis Ngannou. All that fancy footwork, supposedly being the fastest heavyweight we’ve ever seen. All of that went away. Francis tired him out, big time.”

Jon Jones: ”That tells me a lot”

The former light heavyweight champion claimed that his wrestling background gives him a type of endurance that Gane doesn’t possess.

”A lot of people don’t like having someone on top of them and having to earn their way back up to their feet. I watched Francis Ngannou in that last fight, the last rounds, Francis could barely move his feet. He was walking so slowly. And Gane didn’t destroy Francis. Francis outworked Ciryl Gane,” Jones said. ”He got outworked by Francis and that tells me a lot.”

UFC 285 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the co-main event, flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko takes on Alexa Grasso.
