Karl Albrektsson gets alternate spot in PFL MMA’s $1 million tournament, set to face UFC vet

Superior Challenge champion and former Bellator fighter ”King” Karl Albrektsson is set to return to action against UFC vet Antonio Carlos Jr, in what will serve as a playoff alternate bout in PFL MMA’s $1 million light heavyweight tournament.

Albrektsson was initially scheduled to make his PFL debut last month. He was booked against three different opponents, however, every single bout fell through. He even weighed in for the June 21 card, ready to face The Ultimate Fighter winner Andrew Sanchez, but would later lose his opportunity to compete on fight day as Sanchez had to step in for a tournament bout against former PFL champ Sadibou Sy instead.

Now, Albrektsson will finally get the chance to make his PFL debut as he’s officially booked for the promotion’s upcoming card in Hollywood, Florida on August 16.

His opponent Carlos Jr, a 2021 PFL light heavyweight champion and former winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, will definitely be a tough opponent. ”Cara De Sapato” is coming off a decision loss to Alex Polizzi but was riding a five-fight winning streak and seven-fight unbeaten streak before that.

Albrektsson, on the other hand, has won five of his last seven bouts and is coming off a first-round stoppage against Ederson Cristian Macedo that won him the Superior Challenge championship in Sweden.

PFL MMA’s August 16 card will be headlined by a couple of light heavyweight semifinals with last year’s PFL champion Impa Kasanganay taking on Josh Silveira in the main event while the 2022 champ Rob Wilkinson faces Dovlet Yagshimuradov in the co-main.

The card also features lightweight playoffs.

Opening up the main card is Muhammad Ali’s grandson Biaggio Ali Walsh who faces 4-0 prospect Korey Taylor in his second professional MMA bout.

Albrektsson’s fight against Carlos Jr. is scheduled for the prelims. Check out the full fight card below!
