UFC Hall of Famer awake, here is his own words about the fire: ”Can’t believe my parents are alive”

Two days after he rescued his parents from a house fire UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman finally is alert and talking in the hospital.

“I’m the happiest man in the world. Sweet God, I’m so lucky. I can’t believe my parents are alive,” Coleman said in a video posted Thursday.

”I had to make a decision, Wes. Because I got out of my room and went to the door and it was already horrible. I couldn’t breathe. I almost had to go outside and I went back in and got them. I can’t believe I got them but I couldn’t find (our dog) Hammer.”

Sadly, Coleman’s dog did not survive the fire. The former Champion eventually succumbed to the smoke inhalation from the fire, which led to his hospitalization.

Mark Coleman is a true pioneer of Mixed Martial Arts.

As the inaugural UFC heavyweight champ and a former PRIDE grand prix winner, he was a big part of building the sport of MMA in it’s early days. He was nicknamed “The Godfather of Ground-and-Pound” for his fighting style.

At UFC 82 Coleman was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

After going over three years without competing Coleman announced that he has officially retired from MMA competition at 48.
