Why UFC expert claims Oliveira is one win away from lightweight GOAT status

With a record of 29-0, and title defences against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is widely regarded as the greatest lightweight of all time.

However, in a recent YouTube video, former champion and UFC expert Michael Bisping recently argued that Charles Oliveira must be regarded as the best lightweight ever if he defeats Islam Makhachev at UFC 280.

”I think if Charles beats Islam this weekend, it’ll be him. I think he will have surpassed him, simply because he’s taking out all the top contenders. You can not deny the numbers, the momentum, the history that Oliveira’s making,” Bisping said.

Charles Oliveira is a man of many records

In May last year, Oliveira won the vacant UFC lightweight title when he defeated Michael Chandler via a second round TKO. He then defended his belt against Dustin Poirier, winning via a third-round submission at UFC 269 in December.

Ahead of his third title defence at UFC 274 in May, ”do Bronx” missed the championship weight of 155 lbs, and was therefore stripped of the title. However, he just needed a few minutes to defeat the tough Justin Gaethje with a rear-naked-choke.

At age 32, the Brazilian lightweight is already a UFC veteran, making his debut back in 2010. He is currently riding an eleven-fight winning streak and holds the UFC record for most finishes (19) and submissions (16).
