MMA fighters mourn death of Brazilian football legend Pelé

Brazilian football legend Pelé died on Thursday at the age of 82.

Born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento in 1940, in the tiny rural town Três Corações, he became a national hero and a football icon – loved by sports fans all over the world.

As a 17-year-old, the football player got his international breakthrough at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. In the finals, he scored two goals when Brazil defeated Sweden to win their first-ever World Cup. He later came to win two more World Cups with Brazil in 1962 and 1970.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s, he was the biggest football star in the world, and scored a total of 1 279 goals in his 1 363 games, including 77 goals for the Brazilian national team.

Named “Athlete of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee the Brazilian is widely considered to be one of the greatest football players of all-time.
