ONE Muay Thai champion Smilla Sundell plans switch to MMA!

Swedish ONE Championship Muay Thai title holder Smilla Sundell will be back in action on Saturday for a kickboxing fight.

The 18-year-old champion will take on Serbia’s Milana Bjelogrlic in a catchweight bout (128 lbs), in what will be her first fight in over a year.

In a new interview with Frontkick’s sister site Maximum Sports, the Swede revealed that the trouble of finding an opponent in her weight class might force her to move from Muay Thai to MMA.

”I think I will switch to MMA soon, because I have faced every Muay Thai fighter now, there’s not so much more to do here. I will switch more to MMA and to do so I might need to move back to Sweden. Or to the US, I want to try that too soon.”

”I train at Allstars Training Center when I’m home (in Sweden), they take good care of me there. So I will probably start there, but I think I will go to the US later on to train.”

”On the feet I think I will do very well”

Smilla Sundell claimed she’s inspired by ONE fighter Stamp Fairtex who went from Muay Thai to MMA.

”I think I can do the same thing. If she can do it, I can do it,” Sundell said.

Since the Swedish Muay Thai champion is a master class striker, it’s obviously the ground game she needs to work on as she switches sport.

”I think I need a year or two [to learn grappling]. Then I will practice my takedown defence, I think I will do very well on the feet,” Sundell said.

However, before moving to MMA, the young champion intends to defend her ONE Championship Muay Thai title and hopes to fight three times in 2023.
