17 year old Muay Thai sensation Smilla Sundell just made history as the youngest-ever world champion in ONE Championship.
The Swede, who lives in Thailand and represent Fairtex Traning Center, squared off against American Jackie Buntan with the promotions inaugural women’s strawweight Muay Thai world title on the line. The bout marked the co-main event of Friday’s ONE 156 event and after five thrilling rounds, Smilla Sundell was awarded the victory by unanimous decision.
”It feels great. I’m so happy right now. It’s my biggest dream coming true,” Sundell said post-fight.
Nicknamed ”The Storm”, Smilla Sundell showed relentless pressure as she walked her opponent down and picked her appart with quick and accurate strikes throughout most of the fight.
”I like to push my opponents, so I did what I was supposed to do,” she said.
Even though she didn’t get the finish that she wanted, the performance was impressive enough to earn her a $50,000 performance bonus from ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
”Thank you so much, oh my god!” Sundell said while overcome by emotions in her post-fight interview.
