Former UFC interim featherweight champion Yair Rodriguez may have lost the biggest fight of his career, but his good spirit is still intact.

At Saturday’s UFC 290, reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski proved to be a number too big as he TKO’d the Mexican fighter in the third round.

The first two rounds were all Volkanovski, but in the third, Rodriguez found more success with his creative striking until the fighters accidently clashed heads.

Late in the third round Volkanovski landed a stiff right hand that evenutally led to a TKO after some heavy ground-and-pound.

Full statement from Yair Rodriguez

After the tough bout at UFC 290, Yair Rodriguez commented on the defeat in an Instagram post.

”Thanks for watching friends.

I know that expectations were not met, the truth from the heart I had in my mind the vision of winning and the mentality.

I can only say that congratulations to [Alexander Volkanovski] for an excellent performance and to his team as well.

Nothing knocks us down, I said it before and I will continue saying it, resilience is something that is part of me as of all Mexicans and it is also for men to accept defeat when it knocks on our door.

It is not the only opportunity I will have to make all of you who love and support me proud, many more will come! Long live Mexico today and always.”
