A middleweight bout between top ranked Sean Strickland and Jared Cannonier was originally scheduled for the UFC Fight Night on October 15 event, but Strickland was forced to withdraw from the fight due to a bad finger infection.
However, the promotion recently revealed that the flyweight bout between No. 5 ranked Alexa Grasso and No. 6 Viviane Araujo will serve as the new main event.
“Stepping into the main event spotlight. Alexa Grasso and Viviane Araujo go head-to-head for 5 rounds on October 15th,” UFC posted on Instagram.
This is the third time that the two flyweights have been scheduled to fight. They were first set to fight on January 22 at UFC 270 and on August 13. However, both dates fell through.
Mexico’s Alexa Grasso is 3-0 since moving from strawweight to the flyweight division. In her most recent outing she submitted Joanne Wood in the first round.
Her Brazilian opponent Viviane Araujo has three unanimous decision wins in her past four fights, defeating Andrea Lee, Roxanne Modafferi, and Montana De La Rosa.
At the moment, there is no information if the middleweight bout between Strickland and Cannonier will be rescheduled or if the middleweights will be booked against other opponents for their next fights.
