In a recent YouTube video, UFC expert Chael Sonnen gives his thoughts on the potential clash between lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.
“Now we have two legit tough guys who are worth their weight in gold and we are going to put them together. That’s rare. You have two guys that between them have beaten the last 32 men that they have faced.”
“Islam is going to put up a world championship that he just won, but Volkanovski is going to out up a No. 1 pound-for-pound ranking. That’s interesting.”
“It’s a way harder fight than you think. I have seen the odds that are favoring Islam, I have seen all of those things, but I’ve never met somebody who’s going to tell me how Islam does it.”
There is a significant size difference, both in weight and height, between the 155 champion Makhachev and 145 champion Volkanovski, however, that’s something pretty much irrelevant according to the expert.
“145 and 155, just for the record, that’s the same thing,” Sonnen claimed. “How’s he (Makhachev) going to do it? Is he going to outstrike Volkanovski? Nobody has even been close. He’s going to throw Volk down and keep him there? Chad Mendes wouldn’t co-sign that statement.”
“I mean, just as an example, he’s going to hold him down, Max Holloway wouldn’t co-sign that statement. Is Islam better than all of that, should be the No.1 in the world? Well, according to Volkanovski he’s going to be given this opportunity.”
