Former challenger will be backup for the Adesanya vs. Strickland title bout

Top ranked middleweight Jared Cannonier is in Sydney to serve as the backup for the main event title bout between champion Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland at UFC 293.

In case Cannonier’s services is needed, it will be the second time he fights for the title as he challenged Adesanya for the strap back in July 2022.

Since then the 39-year-old racked up back-to-back wins against Strickland and Marvin Vettori.

UFC 293 fight card

UFC 293 will take place on Saturday September 9. Besides the title fight, the main card features a heavyweight co-main event between Tai Tuivasa and Alexander Volkov.

We will also see Swedish light heavyweight Anton Turkalj take on Tyson Pedro in the main card opener.
