The UFC 280 co-main event features a fight between reigning champion Aljamain Sterling and former two-time champ T.J. Dillashaw. However, the title bout is more or less overshadowed by the highly anticipated bout between rising bantamweight star Sean O’Malley and the feared former champ Petr Yan.
In a new interview with Robbie Fox, UFC president Dana White commented on the exciting fight, claiming that for O’Malley, it has the potential to be the same massive breakthrough that the Jose Aldo fight became for Conor McGregor.
”There was this comparison recently where Sean O’Malley said ’I would love to be the next Conor McGregor and be a big global superstar’. Well, it’s about winning key fights. He’s already got that thing that people like about him, now it’s about winning key fights. This fight for him is like Conor’s Jose Aldo fight,” White said.

Sean O’Malley faces the best in the division
However, it’s not an easy task that’s ahead of the star in the making. In fact, Petr Yan is quite possibly the best fighter in the perhaps most stacked UFC division.
”Petr Yan is the number one ranked guy in the world,” White said. ”O’Malley is 27 years old. He’s 15-1, he’s got the experience for this fight, he’s got the reach and height advantage, he’s got knockout power, he’s got all the tools to win this fight. He’s just got to get out there and do it and it’s no easy task. Petr Yan is an absolute savage.”
