With two undisputed champions in Brandon Moreno and Alexa Grasso – and one interim champion in Yair Rodriguez – it seems like the given thing to book UFC Mexico as soon as possible. Especially since all three champions fought in the first quarter of 2023.
However, when UFC President Dana White spoke at a press conference after UFC San Antonio he revealed there are no plans to give the Mexican champs and MMA fans what they want.
“Well, we would obviously love to get back to Mexico and do that, but I don’t know if it’s in the plans right now,” White said. “We’re building the UFC P.I. down there right now, and wait until you guys see that. I can’t wait to share that with you, actually; you know, the renderings for the UFC PI in Mexico – it’s gonna be badass.”
“You’re not wrong, we got three Mexican champions, finally. We probably should be heading to Mexico or at least doing a Cinco de Mayo. But, that didn’t work out, either.”

UFC Mexico City main event was a disaster
UFC has not been to Mexico since UFC Fight Night: “Rodriguez vs. Stephens” back in September 2019. Interestingly enough, Moreno, Grasso and Rodriguez all fought on the card.
Moreno lost a split decision against Askar Askarov while Grasso lost a majority decision to Carla Esparza. That was her last fight in strawweight before she moved up to her current weight class.
The main event between Rodriguez and Jeremy Stephens turned out to be nothing short of a disaster.
In the opening exchange, the hometown hero accidentally eye-poked Stephens so badly that the fight was stopped after just 15 seconds.
Less than a month later, the rivals ran it back in a three-rounder, and this time Rodriguez stood as the winner via unanimous decision.
