Former two-division champion Conor McGregor recently claimed that he would like to get a shot at the welterweight title if he gets past Michael Chandler in their upcoming fight.

Top ranked welterweight contender Gilbert Burns, however, is certain that McGregor has nothing to do in the top of the stacked 170 lbs division.

“The only thing he can do at 170 is make whoever’s the champion rich,” Burns said. “I hope it’s me, but if it’s Leon [Edwards], if it’s Colby [Covington], whoever it is, you’re going to get a lot of money, but I don’t think it’s going to be a hard fight,” Burns said in a recent interview.

The Brazilian claimed that a fully focused and well prepared Conor McGregor is dangerous for anyone in the lightweight division, but welterweight is a whole other story.

“Whenever [McGregor] is committed to training, no whiskey, no crazy stuff, if they lock him up and this guy’s focused on training, he’s very dangerous. But I don’t think that’s the case. But that’s at 155. At 170, it’s a whole different game. We’re all like 190 lbs, lean, mean, fighting the best guys in the world, and this guy thinks he’s going to jump out of the yacht and beat me, beat one of the top 5? Guaranteed, no way he’s doing that.”

“He’s welcome to try, but I guarantee anyone in the top 5 will finish him inside three rounds. He’s done.”

Gilbert Burns will face Jorge Masvidal next

Gilbert Burns is up for a tough fight against former welterweight title challenger Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287 next weekend.

The fight will serve as the co-main event of the evening, and with a convincing win, the Brazilian hopes he can get a new shot at the title.

“If I go out there and dominate this guy and finish what Colby didn’t do in this last fight, what took Kamaru (Usman) seven rounds to do. If I go out there in one or two, I think that says a lot,” Burns recently told MMA Junkie.
