Swedish-Georgian UFC lightweight Guram “The Georgian Viking” Kutateladze will soon be back in the octagon. On August 3, he will face the tough Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady in his fourth UFC fight.
Looking back at his MMA career, the gruelling promotional debut against former KSW double champ Mateusz Gamrot is still his career’s finest moment.
“My UFC debut. I won the fight and it was my coach’s birthday. It was a great way to celebrate,” Kutateladze recently said in an interview on Instagram. “It was my toughest opponent. The most skillful.”
The entertaining back-and-forth fight was awarded with the $50.000 ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus.
While “The Georgian Viking” occasionally faced hard times, with injuries and a bunch of cancelled fights, Gamrot climbed to No. 5 in the lightweight division after his loss to Kutateladze.
“He might fight for the title soon. That’s actually great for me. Then I can climb higher and higher against the title,” Kutateladze said about Gamrot. “My goal is to win the UFC title. To bring it home to Sweden.”
At the moment, Islam Makhachev rules the lightweight division. After winning the vacant belt against Charles Oliveira, he defended it three times against Alexander Volkanovski and Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier. Makhachev will most likely defend the title later this year.
