Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will return to 145 lbs action to defend his strap after he  challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight belt in February.

In a recent interview with The Mac Life, Volkanovski claimed that the promotion offered him a rematch with Makhachev later this year, and revealed why he wasn’t interested in taking the fight.

“We even had more of an option, they even asked what do we want to do, but I mean, I wanted to fight as soon as possible, so that was what it was. I wasn’t lying when I said I wanted to stay busy, you know what I mean, so that was the honest truth, and that was the case,” Volkanovski said.

“They even asked they’re like, ‘Look if you want the rematch, we don’t know; you know that’s not going to be till the end of the year.’ Well, I ain’t waiting until the end of the year. I can fight at featherweight and then see what happens later.”
