UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill vacants his title due to an injury.
“I have unfortunately suffered, I have ruptured my Achilles. Fuck man,” an emotional Hill said in a new video on YouTube. “It’s just one of those things that happens, it’s a tough injury. It’s one that will require surgery and it will require time and rehab and things for me to be out for a while.”
“I was given a blessing that came at the misfortune of someone else. Jiri Prochazka was the champion, he suffered an injury as these things happen. He gave up the belt and allowed for others to not hold the division up, to keep the division moving forward, to make sure the people had a champion, and I’ll do the same.”
Jamahal Hill headlined UFC 283 for the vacant light eavyweight title against Glover Teixeira on January 21, 2023. After putting on a masterclass performance he won the bout via unanimous decision.
Hill gave up his title without having the chance to defend it.
“Right now, the biggest thing is to focus on my recovery, focusing on getting back to one hundred percent. I need to take some time to focus on my health.”
“This is not an easy video for me to make. I like to be transparent and I like to keep it real. If I had my choice would I like to give up the belt? No I wouldn’t. You have to be consistent. I understand, it is the business, the show must go on.”
