A decade ago, the talk of the town was the potential rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. The Swede had pushed the then-light heavyweight champion to the limit in their five-round battle at UFC 165 in September 2013.
Many believed that Gustafsson made more than enough to win the fight and MMA fans all over the world wanted to see the immediate rematch. Jones, however, wanted to fight Daniel Cormier next instead of the dangerous Swede in 2014.
In a message recently unsealed as part of the UFC antitrust lawsuit, you can read the following conversation between UFC CEO Dana White and UFC Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta.
“What’s up with Jones? Did he straighten up or is he still being a scumbag?” White texted then-UFC Chairman Fertitta in a message recently unsealed as part of the UFC antitrust lawsuit.
“Still a douche, but we’re inching closer,” Fertitta responded. “Haven’t moved on money, but sent the letter with an ultimatum.”
“Awesome,” White responded. “Fuck that punk, Lorenzo. He needs to know we don’t need him, or he will fuck us over more than he already does.”
Jon Jones did not fight either Gustafsson or Cormier in his next title defense, but Brazil’s Glover Teixeira on April 26, 2014, at UFC 172. He won the fight via unanimous decision.
“Johnny Bones” and Gustafsson faced each other for the second time December 29, 2018, at UFC 232. Jones stopped his rival via a third-round KO.
