Boxing legend Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Duran, a four-time world champ in four different weight classes, is receiving medical care for a heart problem. That’s according to a Friday statement from his family.
The family of the 72-year-old said that Duran is receiving treatment after suffering ‘a health complication due to an atrioventricular blockade’.
“We are waiting for results so that we can provide more information on his health. We thank our relatives, friends and all of his supporters who are praying for him,” the statement continued.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman claimed Duran is receiving medical care in his native Panama.
“His family is joined by the world in prayers for his successful and prompt recovery, he is a Champion and will win this fight,” Sulaiman said in a statement on X.
Duran had a pro boxing career that lasted more than 30 years, from 1968 to 2001. He held world titles in lightweight, welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight.
Duran was one of the “Four Kings” together with Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns. Nicknamed “Manos de Piedra” (Hands of Stone) he was known as a technical brawler and pressure fighter and holds 70 KO wins.
