On Saturday, Swedish former WBC world champion Patricia Berghult returns to action to clash with former WBO lightweight champion Maria Elena Maderna at local Swedish boxing event Fight-Life 11.
In an exclusive interview with Frontkick, Berghult opens up on facing the seasoned Argentinian veteran in her return to the ring.
“It feels great, I look forward to fighting on my hometurf,” Berghult says. “She’s been a world champion before and she’s got a lot of experience.”
The fight will take place at welterweight, which is a step down in weight for Berghult who was WBC champion in super welterweight.
“Fighters from South America are generally tough, I expect her to come with everything she got. It will be a tough fight, which I really look forward to. She faced top fighters like Amanda Serrano and has got good experience.”

Patricia Berghult: “I belong in the top”
In September last year, the Swede faced British world champion Natasha Jonas in front of a loud crowd at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena.
The fight went the distance, and hometown hero Jonas eventually got her hand raised, winning Berghult’s WBC female super-welterweight belt.
Therefore a win against Maderna on Saturday is by all means crucial for the Swede, who intends to get back in the title mix as soon as possible.
“I’m looking to prove that I belong at the top. We’ll take one fight at the time, Saturday’s fight first, then we will aim for a title fight. Boxing is so unpredictable so you never know what will happen next. I’ve been around long enough to be used to it,” Berghult says.
When do you see yourself fight for the title again?
“Maybe I need one more win after this fight, but we’re counting on something big coming up shortly. You have to train all the time and be able to take fights on short notice. If you get the call you have to be ready. I’m always training for the big fights.”
