In English: Aleksandra Toncheva reflects on wild title win: ”I was close to heart attack”

Last weekend Aleksandra Toncheva introduced herself to the Swedish MMA fans by beating Nina Back in a hard-fought title bout at Superior Challenge 28.

After a dramatic turn of events, Bulgarian strawweight Aleksandra Toncheva was officially crowned the new Superior Challenge champion last Saturday. In a thrilling and violent three-round bout that pushed her to the absolute limit, she edged out Swedish fan favorite Nina Back.

However, the celebration was briefly overshadowed by a confusing mix-up, as the MC mistakenly announced the wrong winner before the decision was corrected.

”I feel great with the belt around my waist, Toncheva tells Frontkick about the dramatic fight. ”I was sure that the match was in my favor and when this confusion happened and MC said her name as a winner, I was so shocked. For the fourth time in my career, they were going to take away my victory and I was close to heart attack! Glad all went well and I recieved what I deserved!”

Toncheva executed her gameplan perfectly and was able to win a unanimous decision despite the deafening support for Back from the Swedish crowd.

”My plan was not to take risks on the ground and to let her come to me and counter her with kicks and long combinations. I stopped her intentions for takedown in the second round with kicks and I also landed clear and hard punches in the counter game. Everything went according to mine and my coach’s plan.”

What does this victory mean for your career?

”To be honest, this victory means a lot for me, because as I sayed I wanted to do this for my mum’ s birthday and also to have my first belt from a major European organisation.”

Aleksandra Toncheva: ”The atmosphere was incredible”

Aleksandra Toncheva hopes to return to Sweden to defend her strap at Annexet. Hopefully, it won’t be too long until we see her fight at Superior Challenge.

”The atmosphere was incredible and the Superior Challenge staff was really kind and professional. I like how things was organised outside and inside. Excluding the shock I experieneced before taking the belt,” Toncheva says and gives her take on defending the belt:

”I will discuss the future with my lovely managers. I have some names on my mind, but now it is time for couple of beers and little deserved rest!”
