On Saturday, former champion Charles ”do Bronx” Oliveira will square off against No. 4 ranked contender Islam Makhachev in a lightweight title bout in Abu Dhabi.

The backup fighter to the highly anticipated bout is dominant featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. And even if the Australian fighter won’t get the chance come Saturday, he is more or less promised to compete for the 155 title in the future.

In an recent interview with Barstool Sports, UFC president Dana White actually confirmed that Volkanovski is likely to be next in line for a lightweight title bout.

“Well, it makes sense. It makes sense,” White said.

Alexander Volkanovski takes backup role seriously

Talking to MMA Junkie, the dominant featherweight champion said that as a backup fighter it’s business as usual.

“I’m just going through the week as if it’s a normal fight week and I’m fighting,” Volkanovski said. “We’re training at nighttime. I’m still training for both guys, I’m still game planning and picturing being cross from them this weekend,” Volkanovski said.

The Australian fighter won’t relax until the door to the cage is closed.

“We’ve had people somehow not be able to fight (on) fight day. I’ll stay as if I could be fighting.”

Volkanovski claimed he’s prepared for both fighters, but for legacy reasons he prefers to fight Charles Oliveira if he could choose.
